New Mexico Before Columbus

Alan Osborne, a NM Humanities Council Chautauqua Speaker, will present a short history of New Mexico prior to the European Age of Discovery. Osborne is a co-founder of Southwest Seminars of Santa Fe.

Synopsis: Life in North America before Columbus is a long and fascinating human story which is often overlooked or condensed in our history books in favor of the colonial explorations, exploits, settlements and stories. We now have the advantage of more than a half century of state-sponsored archaeological investigations and more than a century of anthropological interaction with New Mexico and the Southwest. We live in one of the most studied cultural areas in North America north of Mexico with more than 100,000 identified historical sites cataloged from the long span of human habitation here. The talk will include a look at Paleo-Indian, Archaic, and Classic ancestral cultures as we understand them today.

When:
Sunday, April 16, 2017 2:00 PM thru 03:00 PM
Where:
Sandoval County Historical Society Museum (DeLavy House), Bernalillo.  Turn at the IHOP restaurant and follow the road to the museum.

Pope and Naranjo: Leadership in the Pueblo Revolt 1680

The Friends of Coronado Historic Site Lecture

Presented By Stephanie Beninato

Stefanie Beninato, Ph.D., is a Southwest historian who has been plying her trade as a tour guide in Santa Fe for several years. She is dedicated to providing entertaining and informative programs including walking tours, lectures and meditation programs. She has worked for the state museum systems and participated in archaeological digs and field work.

Synopsis: There are many questions surrounding the events of 1680 when the Pueblos banded together to throw out the Spanish. Was Popé from  Ohkay Owingeh (known today as San Juan Pueblo)  the leader of the Revolt? Were there other leaders? Dr. Beninato will examine the documents within a cooperative model of Pueblo leadership so we can appreciate this event and its enormous consequences on the cultural landscape of New Mexico.
