On September 22 at 2pm, Linda Tigges, PhD. will discuss her recent research into the merchants in Colonial New Mexico and the transatlantic trade and the textiles and clothing they brought back to New Mexico from Nueva España.
In the 1700s New Mexico merchants loaded mule trains with animal hides and cloth and set out for the markets at El Paso and Chihuahua. They returned with everyday goods and with European luxuries such as Lorraine lace and Brittany linen from New Spain’s Atlantic trade. They also brought silks, porcelain, and pearls to Acapulco on the Manila galleons. In this way, New Mexico became part of the Spanish global trade system. Using original documents, Spanish Colonial historian Dr. Linda Tigges will bring the merchant exploits and their remarkable goods to life.
